Not so long ago, when his teeth were falling out from all the crack he was smoking, Antony Genn wouldn’t have received a particularly warm welcome at the swooping Rem Koolhaas–designed, luxury-shopping Prada terrarium in Soho. He’d played with Pulp when he was 16 and was roommates with Robbie Williams. Eventually, he was just getting wasted with Shane McGowan. But since he got sober, his old friend Damien Hirst paid for him to go into the studio, and on September 7 his band, the Hours, will play a private gig at the Prada store for Fashion Week insiders. (They’ll be performing under a mock-up of For the Love of God, Hirst’s $99-million diamond-encrusted platinum skull.) He spoke to Carl Swanson.
Why did Hirst pay for your recording?
The thing is, he’s funded so many people to do so many things. Oh God, I’ve known artists that he’s kept food on their tables for the last ten years. He doesn’t have that much money because he fucking spends it. He buys art, he gives it away, he buys other people’s art, he puts money into projects, he gives loads to charity.

Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (The Young Ladies of Avignon) depicts five prostitutes in a brothel, in the Avignon Street of Barcelona (Spain). Picasso created over one hundred sketches and studies in preparation for this work, one of the most important in the early development of Cubism. Within the narrative of early modern art, it is a pivotal work in the development of modern art, widely held as a seminal work. Picasso called it “my first exorcism painting.”

Artist Damien Hirst has unveiled For The Love Of God, a diamond-encrusted human skull worth $98m (£50m) — said to be the most expensive piece of contemporary art. The 18th Century skull is entirely covered in 8,601 jewels. The centrepiece of the 41-year-old’s creation is a $8m pear-shaped pink diamond, set in the skull’s forehead. { BBC | Continue reading }
The skull is a platinum replica of a human skull bought by Hirst two years ago in a London taxidermy shop. The original is thought to be that of a 35-year-old man who lived in Europe between 1720 and 1810. The teeth have been taken from the original, polished, and then reset in the cast.
Robin Simon, editor of the British Art Journal, said: “All of Hirst’s works are stunts – but this one is just a more expensive stunt. It’s vacuous nonsense. It is not even made by Hirst. He comes up with the concept and he gets his technicians to do the rest. As a piece of workmanship it is very good, but it is just window dressing. As art it is extremely dull.” The work took 18 months to make.
The multi-millionaire artist, 41, has already received several offers from collectors. But he dreams of seeing the skull on display among the ancient treasures at the British Museum. { This Is London | Continue reading }

Artist and biologist Angelo Vermeulen introduced his installation Blue Shift [LOG. x] last Summer at Isea2006. Blue Shift [LOG. x] was co-realized with biologist Luc De Meester (University of Leuven, Belgium) and engineers from Philips. The project consists of an interactive installation piece with an evolving model ecosystem at its core. Visitors induce a microevolution of the light-responsive behavior of water flea populations. The project aims to question the status of the utilitarian in art and science. Video footage, photos and biological data will be used to demonstrate the working process.
