Norfolk, VA - the tunnel portion is there so if the bridge was bombed in case of a war the fleet could still leave port (no joke)

Another one like this in Denmark:

Similar tunnel goes the last way fom Sweden to Denmark ending in the artificial island Peberholm.

Title comes from a song by The Smiths, no?

Oh yes, the comment about wartime needs instigating the ‘Undergroundness’ is accurate. None to come any time soon, I hope.

    Yes, The Smiths.

I prefer the far more impressive bridge system that starts just a few miles from where this one is. I’m talking about the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel system, which is 1;7.7 miles across open ocean and has, I think, two underwater sections.

San Diego has a similar “military-friendly” bridge, except that the island is a military base. If the bridge gets bombed, there are pontoons chained to the bottom that will form a floating road to replace the bridge.

What fleet? The fleet is alrdy stationed outside (east of) this bridge/tunnel.. unless they want to run for cover deep inland. Besides there’s one more bridge close by (a bit to nortwast) that will block any fleet if bombed..

    nice try though

    some kewl engineering there …

    Hm, interesting :)

There is also a similar highway tunnel tying two ends of Tokyo Bay. I think it might be longer than the one presented.

  16. TBone Says:

The tunnel was placed so that ships could pass period, its more effective and safe than building a tall bridge… if you look at the 1st picture its evident a large military vessel couldn’t pass there at all.

  17. Benjamin Says:

Wow, memories… Use to live in Newport New, Va. right next to the Ship yard. We crossed that bridge almost once a week. There is an even longer bridge/tunnel section just to the east. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. It has 2 tunnel sections and the whole trip one way is about 20 miles long. Also can be seen in Mission Impossible 3! More info at… www.cbbt.com.

I’ve looked at that one frequently lately for my day job.
